SC Labs is eagerly anticipating the 2019 Emerald Cup, the largest organic, outdoor cannabis competition in the world. This respected annual event brings together cannabis experts and educators along with farmers, patients, and patrons to honor the finest, organic, sun-grown cannabis harvest in California.
This year carries even more significance as it is SC Labs’ 10th anniversary in collaboration with the Emerald Cup, bringing the Science of Cannabis™ testing and analytics to the competition. The 2009 Emerald Cup was our first official gig as SC Labs. We owe our success, in part, to our rich family ties with Tim and Taylor Blake, event founders.
Ten years ago, cannabis testing was a new service offering in California and only a few testing labs existed. The Emerald Cup took a chance on our vision and embraced SC Labs as their official partner in laboratory testing and analysis. The Blake family not only believed in us but vouched for us in the heart of the Emerald Triangle. This was a crucial time for SC Labs to establish ourselves when testing cannabis was new and had yet to establish it’s true value to the community, which has played out over the years.
In 2009, cannabinoid testing was the only test performed on the competition’s entries. Over the years, additional tests for pesticides and microbial impurities were added to the competition, helping to accelerate the Emerald Cup in its own ascension, to become the prominent competition for organic, sun-grown cannabis in CA, the US, and likely the world.
Upon reflection, the past decade of both testing for and speaking at the Emerald Cup has provided a platform for SC Labs to demonstrate to the cannabis community that we have become the leaders in analytical chemistry focused on the Science of Cannabis™.
With the addition of more stringent testing requirements leading to disqualification from the competition, farmers and concentrate manufacturers have worked tirelessly to evolve their practices to meet and exceed standards which the Emerald Cup placed on entries, in a time where no standards on pesticide or contaminant limits had ever been established. The high standards set by the Emerald Cup has resulted in many legacy contestants and up-and-coming rising leaders within the cannabis community to evolve their best-practices and integrative pest management (IPM) strategies to the point where many of these legacy contestants now exhibit some of the lowest fail rates across all contaminant testing in California’s newly regulated marketplace.
SC Labs has tracked its progress and growth in conjunction with the Emerald Cup and its rise to fame, recognition, and respect within the California cannabis community. Upon reflection, the past decade of both testing for and speaking at the Emerald Cup has provided a platform for SC Labs to demonstrate to the cannabis community that we have become the leaders in analytical chemistry focused on the Science of Cannabis™.
Over the 10 years we’ve worked with the Emerald Cup, SC Labs has grown from a team of four in 2009 to a team of close to 120 servicing our growing list of clients. We continue to advance industry knowledge and experience and are proud to be considered vital leaders that provide a passionate voice for progress and inspiration within our beloved cannabis community.
SC Labs is a proud partner of the Emerald Cup. We owe a great deal to the Blake family for establishing such a respected event and for giving us a platform to launch our service offerings. We look forward to continued growth and success by helping clients meet new challenges, advocating for common sense regulation—and always keeping a strong connection to our cannabis roots.
